Rehearse for Change is a theater-based program designed for adolescents ages 12-15 to inspire creativity, foster self-expression, and build essential life skills. The program aims to support at-risk youth by using theater and the arts as tools for healing and personal growth.
The idea for Rehearse for Change was sparked by my experience at the ACLU National Advocacy Institute in Washington, D.C., where I learned about the "school-to-prison pipeline" that disproportionately impacts kids my age. This alarming issue motivated me to seek solutions that could make a difference in the lives of young people. After researching the impact of arts programs on youth development, I set out to create a platform that could empower teens to share their stories and find their voice through acting.
The program has grown through my work with young people in various settings. At Camp Taconic in Massachusetts, I had the chance to engage with youth in creative activities, and I piloted the program at my school, Newark Academy. These experiences reinforced the importance of creating spaces where teens can feel heard, valued, and empowered. As a passionate actor, singer, and performer, I’ve been immersed in the arts for over a decade. At Newark Academy, I’ve performed in multiple productions, including roles such as Portia in Something Rotten and Rosina in Downeck, a collaboration with the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark. I’ve also participated in vocal groups like LumeNAtion a cappella and Academy Voices over the past three years.
